Mayor Dixie wears a pin calling for her re-election.
The settings on the wrecking ball: Ready, Get Set, Smash, Ravage, Damage, Wreck, Pulp.
The wrecking balls are named Big Bertha, Black Thunder, T. Minnie Martoonis, Judgement Day, and The Terminator.
The safety helmet that Arnold wears covers just the bald spot in the middle of his head.
Ernie gives Arnold an apparently random nickname: Bill.
Ernie loves Smashed, a Dino Spumoni song about a man with a broken heart that, in return, starts to break their lover's things.
A flashback is shown when Grandma tells Arnold about the Circle Theater:
A banner that reads "Spumoni and the Silktones" is behind the scenario where Dino performs. This banner is still in the theater when Arnold visits it.
Grandma is wearing the same outfit she has when preparing to protest the demolition.
Grandma was a blonde when she was young. This is shown again in "Girl Trouble".
Gerald, Helga, Harold, Stinky, Sid, Phoebe, Rhonda and Eugene do not appear in this episode.
This is the first episode Gerald doesn't appear in. It's also the only episode of the season that he doesn't appear in.
Production notes[]
This is the first episode to have a different song playing in the end credits instead of the usual theme.
Cultural References[]
Dino Spumoni's character and singing voice are modeled after singer Frank Sinatra.
Dino Spumoni's name is likely based on Rat Pack members Dean Martin (whose real name is Dino Crocetti) and Frank Sinatra.
Ironically, Arnold was riding a wrecking ball in his fantasy in the opening a la the way AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson would at the time when the band performed Ballbreaker at concerts.
One connection between AC/DC and Nickelodeon parent company Viacom was Beavis and Butthead, the MTV cartoon which AC/DC used in the opening of concerts during the band's 1996 Ballbreaker concert tour.
Grandma yells at Ernie, "come over here and say that, demolition man!". This could be a reference to 1993 film Demolition Man.
Story Analysis[]
Despite having his first date with Grandma at the Circle theater, Grandpa Phil feels less ambitious to save the building like how Grandma does.
Despite later being revealed to be 67 years old, it is implied in this episode that Spumoni is older, having first performed at the Circle Theater as a young man when Arnold's octogenarian grandparents were also young.
