General[]
- This episode introduces Arnold's baseball hero Mickey Kaline.
- Some of the ads in the stadium include Pop Top Kola, Green's Hawaii Tours, Your Ad Here, B-EYE TV "First In Happy News" and ZING! Shave X-Tra Smooth.
- There are signs on the stadium calling for "No Smoking", "No Spitting" and "Keep Quigley Stadium Clean".
Production notes[]
- This episode uses different music for the credits. It's the Hey Arnold! theme played on a ballpark organ.
- This is the first episode directed by Dale Case.
- Ron Perlman, from the TV series Beauty and the Beast, voices Mickey Kaline.
- Next to Arnold's "THIS IS NOT MONEY" jar is a "Donna Smith's Spelling Book". Donna Smith is the show's production manager.
Continuity[]
- This episode features the Quigley Stadium, first introduced in Eugene's Bike.
Cultural References[]
- There are actually two Quigley Stadiums in the United States: a 15,000 seater stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas and a 2,000 seater stadium in West Haven, Connecticut.
- When Arnold announces Mickey Kaline's retirement, Grandpa says "That old fat guy? I thought he was dead." Grandpa could be referencing Babe Ruth, considered by many to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time, who passed away in 1948.
- Both Mickey Kaline and Babe Ruth wear shirt number 3.
- Stinky says the exact same line in "School Dance" regarding Dino Spumoni.
- Grandma's line, "Kill the umpire!" is a reference to the poem Casey at the Bat.
- It may be revealed that Mickey Kaline was a real MLB baseball player who played that year.
Story Analysis[]
- It is revealed that Arnold is passionate about baseball. He is found playing baseball in "The Vacant Lot" and "Dangerous Lumber"; however, in "Benchwarmer", Arnold plays basketball. In "Mud bowl", "Stoop Kid" and "New Bully on the Block", Arnold is found playing football.
Morals[]
- Always admire your heroes even if they die or retire.
- Take care when buying tickets from non-official retailers.
- Arnold and Gerald get tickets half-price from a second-hand reseller, but the seats they take make the game unwatchable, not worth the savings at the end.
