It seems as though Arnold is first learning of Ruth in this episode, even though he already knew about her in "The Little Pink Book".
At around 02:23 into the episode, when Arnold is heard practicing his opening lines to say to Ruth, there is a shot of the bumper car ride stand and people leaning into it; Ruth, Arnold and Gerald are seen, and Arnold is staring directly at Ruth. In the next shot, Arnold and Gerald appear to be somewhere else, with a green brick wall background and a fence, cueing and entering the festival. A while later, Arnold spots Ruth and jumps in surprise (despite being shown at the bumper car ride stand staring directly at her initially). This is a continuity error of sorts: this shot seems to be from the bumper car scene used later at around 06:21, when Ruth is standing right beside Arnold and he's staring directly at her. It was seemingly used as a filler shot.
