Monkeynucleosis is probably a parody of an actual disease called mononucleosis, better known as mono.
After Helga gets home from the park, she reads a comic book and laughs, stating "Oh, that Jughead! Can't he see that Veronica has no interest in him whatsoever?", making a reference to the Archie comics, even though Jughead isn't interested in Veronica at all.
In Biosquare, Helga is reading another comic, to which she comments "That Jughead sure gets into some crazy mishaps."
According to composer Jim Lang, the music in Helga's nightmare is patterned after that of The Elephant Man. In addition, Helga says, "I am not a monkey! I'm a girl!", a reference to the memorable line "I AM NOT AN ANIMAL! I AM A HUMAN BEING!"
