"Helga's Parrot" is an episode in the Hey Arnold! TV Series.
Synopsis[]
A sleep-talking Helga confides into Bob's parrot about her love for Arnold. The next day, the parrot flies into Arnold's window, and it is up to Helga to get it.
Plot[]
Arnold is on the bus and asks Lila if she will work with him and she agrees. Helga gets jealous and wonders what Arnold sees in her. She gets home to see that Bob purchased a parrot. He tells it to say, "All hail, the Beeper King". That night, Bob is annoyed by its squawking while he was trying to watch TV and puts it in Helga's room. Helga says a poem aloud about Arnold and writes it down. She keeps saying the poem about her love for Arnold aloud and ends it by saying her name, not knowing the bird was there and heard every word of it.
That morning she discovers the parrot and found out it heard every word of the poem and is reciting it constantly. The parrot starts talking and Helga tries to get it to shut up. Miriam asks what Helga is doing and she says "nothing". She goes to the garage to find a chainsaw and kill the bird. Unfortunately, Bob hears the bird talking and tries to kill it himself, but it escapes out the window. Helga returns to find the bird outside. She tries to talk it into coming back, but it just defecates on her arm. She yells that it can't hide. She tries numerous attempts to catch it but fails.
It flies into Arnold's house and Helga fears the worst. She tries to ask Arnold if he's seen a parrot but sees it and changes the question before leaving. Arnold talks to his grandpa, and he says that they should keep it. They leave to go get some birdseed and Helga follows them. She tries to grab the bird, but it lets out a squawk. Arnold and Grandpa turn around and ask Helga if she is buying a pet. She says yes and that she is getting a Monitor Lizard. Arnold says it looks mean, but the pet store employee says not to talk Helga out of it because the lizard has been here for so long, she's taught it how to read. Helga leaves it with Phoebe until she can think of a plan.
Helga sneaks into the boarding house and goes into Arnold's room. When she goes to Arnold’s room, she can hear Arnold and Lila about to come in and she’s forced to hide in the wall space behind the foldable couch. Lila comes in and they start working on their project. Arnold's parrot starts talking and almost says Helga. Lila says Arnold should bring the bird tomorrow for show & tell. Helga pulls on Lila's hair and thump's Arnold's ear to distract them from hearing the poem. The parrot is about to recite the whole poem, but Helga pushes Lila down so they couldn’t listen.
Lila is scared and insists they do the project at her house. Helga realizes she’s now stuck at Arnold's house because she accidentally lost the remote that activates the couch when she first went into the wall space. While he prepares for bed, Helga ends up seeing Arnold undressing which causes her to faint. The next day comes and Arnold has left for school with the bird. Stuck inside the walls, Helga is forced to burst out through the floorboards and drops down into the next floor onto the boarding house kitchen table and limps for school.
She arrives at her class and finds the parrot beginning to recite the poem. Phoebe brought the Monitor lizard with her and tells Helga that her parents won't let her keep the lizard, but Helga is preoccupied by the parrot and tries to sneak up on it. While the parrot recites the poem, Phoebe realizes the Monitor Lizard managed to get loose from its leash and tries to look for it. Just before the parrot is about to finish the poem and say Helga’s name and right when Helga is about to hit the parrot with an umbrella, the monitor lizard pounces on the parrot and eats the bird in one gulp.
Helga is relieved that her secret wasn’t exposed while the rest of the class is horrified and Lila tries to comfort a shocked and clearly devastated Arnold. Mr. Simmons tries to console the class telling them that what just happened was part of nature, but faints at the sight of the lizard. Helga rubs the lizard’s chin and says that she and the lizard will get along just fine.
