"Grandpa's Sister" is an episode in the Hey Arnold! TV Series.
Synopsis[]
Grandpa's sister Mitzi unexpectedly comes over to the Sunset Arms, and Grandpa isn't too happy about it.
Plot[]
Arnold and Grandpa are getting ready for a fishing trip. They open the door to the boarding house and see an elderly woman standing before them with some luggage. She thrusts her bags into Grandpa's arms, says hello to Arnold, and shoves her way inside. The woman introduces herself as Mitzi, Phil's fraternal twin sister. Arnold and the other boarders are surprised that Grandpa has a sister, since he never talked about her in the past. She says that despite her living in Hillwood, she has not been to the boarding house or spoken to Phil in 70 years. Phil argues that they haven't spoken for 71 years, and demands to know why she's there, and when she is leaving. Mitzi says that she would like to get to know her great-nephew better and is planning on moving into the boarding house. Gertie is excited to have a sleepover with Mitzi but ends up making Phil sleep in Arnold's room. Arnold suggests that Phil make peace with Mitzi since she will be moving in, but Phil declares war, formulating plans to get Mitzi to leave.
Early the next morning, Phil drills small holes in the ceiling of Mitzi's room, and dumps water onto it. The water drips onto Mitzi, and Phil claims he was meaning to fix the leaky roof. He also advises her to not use the shower since the water heater is broken, and Mitzi leaves to use another bathroom. Phil laughs at his trick, then goes to use the shower. Mitzi gets her revenge by flushing the downstairs toilet repeatedly, making the water in the shower go from warm to scalding.
Later, Phil sets out mousetraps in Mitzi's room. When Mitzi asks, Phil says there is a serious rat problem in the house, then leaves. Mitzi then squeals in fright and calls Phil back in. Phil accidentally steps on a bunch of the traps, triggering them. Mitzi shuts the door as Phil hollers, and the other boarders ask what all the commotion is. Mitzi says there is a "big, fat rat" in the boarding house.
At dinner, Mitzi is telling the boarders embarrassing stories about Phil's childhood. Phil tells Arnold that she'll stop laughing at him soon, as he spiked her mashed yams with laxatives. Gertie tries to give Mitzi more yams, but Mitzi reveals she dumped the yams onto Phil's plate while he was distracted. Phil, having just eaten a few big spoonful's, is outraged. He has had enough and wants Mitzi to leave, but before he can say that he bolts to the bathroom.
Later, Phil is drawing up some plans. Arnold asks what the plans are for, and Phil declares they are for "Mitzi's Doomsday Device." He plans to build something to get back at Mitzi once and for all. Arnold leaves Phil to it but is worried. He talks to Gertie, expressing his concern for Mitzi's safety. He wants to know why his grandfather and great-aunt hate each other. Gertie tells him to check an album in the parlor. Arnold finds the album titled "Phil and Mitzi" and looks through it. It is full of pictures of Phil, Mitzi and their dog, Pooter. The three of them are seen happily playing together on bikes, at the beach, and bathing the dog. After a certain point, the pictures depict Phil and Mitzi acting coldly to each other, and Pooter is no longer in the shots.
The next day, a loud commotion and screaming wakes Arnold up. He goes to find Grandpa and ask what is happening. Grandpa reveals that he just finished building the doomsday device and tested it on Oskar. The device will dump cold water onto the victim, causing them to jump onto a spring-loaded board, which will launch them out of the window and into a waiting hornet's nest. Arnold feels this has gone too far, and questions if Grandpa and Mitzi ever got along. Grandpa denies it, but Arnold pulls out a picture of Phil, Mitzi, and Pooter. Phil reminisces about the dog, and Mitzi joins in. They share fond memories of playing with the dog, but eventually reveal what happened: Pooter escaped from the backyard, and he had been run over by a truck. The vet had to put him to sleep, and that day was the day Phil and Mitzi stopped getting along. They start blaming each other for allowing the dog to escape, but Arnold intervenes, insisting it was an accident. He says that neither of them was at fault, nor they both need to accept that. Phil and Mitzi think it over, then hug and apologize to each other. Phil says that if Mitzi wants to stay, she can. Mitzi laughs and says that the boarding house is a dump and is ready to go home. She starts entering her room to pack, but Phil stops her, rushing in to stop the doomsday device. He accidentally triggers it and gets sent into the hornet's nest. Mitzi and Arnold go to help him.
Later, Phil, Mitzi, and Arnold go fishing. They take some pictures of the fun and mishaps, and place them in the album, now titled "Phil and Mitzi and Arnold."
