  • This episode, along with "Phoebe's Little Problem", were the final half-hour aired in the 8 years of Hey Arnold!. (though it was not intended to be) "The Journal" is actually the final produced two-part episode, similar to how "2Geniuses 2Gether 4Ever", "Comedy of Feathers", "What's the Big Idea?", "Octi Gone", "Destination Imagination" and "Goodbye to Bloo" were the final produced/aired episodes of Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends on Cartoon Network.

  • The word puzzle on the lid of the Yahoo! soda bottle is called a Rebus puzzle.
  • When Grandma misses hitting the fly, she exclaims "Nertz!" which is also the name of a card game created in the 1890s.
  • Grandma is playing the role of a hardboiled detective. She also calls herself "Spade" as a reference to fictional private detective Sam Spade and calls Arnold "Marlowe" as a reference to fictional detective Philip Marlowe.
  • "Ivana Davancevic" is an allusion to crew member and writers' assistant Danica Ivancevic.
  • Grandma's line "here's looking up your own address" is a parody of the line "here's looking at you" from the film Casablanca.
  • The jazz DJ says, "we got more smiles from Miles," referring to jazz musician Miles Davis.
  • Marv, the owner of the scarf store, is modeled after actor Peter Lorre.
    • This is the second time that Hey Arnold! has referenced a famous horror movie actor, the first time being in "Sid the Vampire Slayer".
  • Grandpa Phil opening the door and saying "Here's grandpa!" was a reference to the movie The Shining, when Jack Torrance said "Here's Johnny!".
  • The address of Marv's Scarves, 32 Hammett Ave, is a reference to detective author Dashiell Hammett who created the character of Sam Spade.
  • The address Marv gives, 1941 Chandler Street, is a reference to detective author Raymond Chandler who created the character of Philip Marlowe.
