"Eugene's Pet" is an episode in the Hey Arnold! TV Series.

Synopsis[]

Arnold accidentally kills Eugene's goldfish and is determined to get him a new pet.

Plot[]

During Show & Tell, Eugene talks about how he’s wanted a pet, but could never have one because of various problems (due to being an unlucky jinx). That was until Eugene got a Goldfish he named Henry that he shows off to the class. He even bought Henry a plastic castle for his fishbowl. Arnold then begins his turn and shows off his new Yo-Yo. But when Arnold tries the shoot the moon trick, the Yo-Yo breaks from its string and flies into Eugene’s fishbowl which knocks the castle knight with a mace onto Henry and kills the fish. Eugene is distraught as Arnold apologizes before Eugene screams out NOO!!

Eugene is about to flush Henry down the toilet in the boy’s bathroom, but changes his mind at the last second and wants to bury Henry instead. They make a grave for Henry at Gerald field and Gerald gives a moving eulogy for Henry. But once the eulogy is finished, a cat jumps into the grave and leaves with Henry’s body in its mouth to eat.

Arnold and Gerald take Eugene to the pet store to find him a new pet. Unfortunately none of the pets they find are compatible with Eugene as the parrot pooped on his arm, the hamster bit his nose, and the garter snake coiled around his head and cut off his air circulation. Eugene begins to think he’s doomed to not have a pet.

The next day at school during recess, Eugene is happily leaving food out for an imaginary hippo he named Elbert to the concern of Arnold and Gerald. Eugene throws a ball for Elbert to catch which just stays in one spot. The class bell rings, but Eugene decides not to go back inside saying he needs to take care of Elbert who he claims is still a baby. Back inside, Arnold looks outside in worry at Eugene as it begins to rain while Eugene holds up an umbrella for a nonexistent hippo.

Eugene is shown putting up signs for Elbert and claims that Elbert ran away after chewing through his leash. Arnold asks Eugene can talk to his Mom about this but Eugene replies that she’s not a hippo person.

Arnold is depressed as his grandma serves herring for dinner which Arnold doesn’t want to eat.

After daydreaming in his room, Arnold has an epiphany about what to do for Eugene.

Arnold and Gerald take Eugene to the aquarium where Arnold managed to have the aquarium let Eugene adopt an Angel Fish as a pet, but it will still remain safe in the aquarium. Eugene is thrilled and names the fish Angel and is relieved that Angel will be safe there. Unfortunately, when Eugene’s back is turned, a shark eats Angel in one gulp which horrifies Arnold and Gerald who saw what happened. Arnold tells Gerald to not say anything as Eugene turns around to look at Angel, but he can’t find her and doesn’t know where she went.
