The Sunset Arms band

The Sunset Arms band

  • In the scene on the roof, we can hear the musical band organized by Arnold. Grandpa is the conductor, Grandma plays piano, Gerald plays violin, Mr. Hyunh plays cello, and Ernie plays concertina.
    • Mr. Hyunh, Ernie, and Grandma play their instruments on the rooftop again in The Jungle Movie.
  • First episode focused on Oskar, revealing his greedy and selfish personality.
  • Mr. Hyunh lives in Room 3; Oskar and Suzie live in Room 5; Ernie lives in Room 7.
  • This is the first episode featuring a tango scene. In April Fool's Day, the school dance includes a tango number.
  • Helga only appears in one scene; she is in her bedroom closet, which is dedicated to her Arnold shrine. She doesn't speak in this episode either.
  • Phoebe, Harold, Stinky, Sid, Eugene and Rhonda do not appear in this episode.

Continuity[]

  • Oskar would knock the boarders' doors again in Oskar Gets a Job, this time asking for money.
  • Throughout the series, it appears that Mr. Hyunh is very musically talented. Besides the cello, he plays the guitar and sings country in "Mr. Hyunh Goes Country" and also plays the trombone in the series finale, "The Journal".

Cultural References[]

  • Helga's cameo is a parody of the lamp scene from 1987 film Fatal Attraction.
  • When Oskar is leaving Arnold's room he says "I'm hitting the road, Jack". Hit The Road Jack is a 1961 R&B song by Ray Charles, about a man being kicked out by his fed up lover.

Story Analysis[]

  • In a desperate attempt to reunite Oskar and Suzie, so he can have his room back, Arnold plans a romantic dinner by telling Suzie that Oskar "talks about [her] all the time" and telling Oskar that Suzie said that "she missed [him]". This is a rare instance in which Arnold doesn't act transparently to solve a interpersonal issue. The consequences are negligible though as at such dinner Oskar quickly figures out that Suzie still is mad at him and Suzie finds that Oskar is not "a changed man" at all.

Morals[]

  • Share and care about others instead of being stingy and greedy. Sharing rhymes with caring.
